About our group:

The Mechanical Product Development team is responsible for all aspects of mechanical product development within the recording head technology department (RHT). This includes HDM validation, AAB integration, factory integration and performance / reliability assessments. This team is made up of tribologists, AAB designers, product engineers and process integration engineers.

About the role - you will:

  • Manage the tradeoffs between slider manufacturing requirements and the product electrical & mechanical performance requirements
  • Manage the integration of emerging slider technology into new products to meet performance and reliability requirements.
  • Serve as a technical resource to identify technology gaps and resolve issues relating to slider processing.
  • Serve as a resource in investigating Failure Analysis modes that have been identified as slider related.
  • Overseeing the Head-Gimbal-Assembly (HGA) mechanical design and specification, thermo-mechanical design migration plan and customer support.
  • Defining and supporting the mechanical product configuration for a successful product launch, driving for Time to Market (TTM), Time to Volume (TTV), cost, quality and reliability requirements.
  • Executing on product development deliverables through rigorous data analysis, management of Critical-To-Quality (CTQs) parameters, and application of Six Sigma tools such as DOE's, FMEA's, CTQ flowdown and scorecard development.
  • Managing component/drive experiments and prototype/pre-production builds, component and drive performance, and effectively communicating key findings to a broad audience.
  • Leading FA activities by working with cross-functional teams to narrow down root cause and to come up with corrective actions.

This Product Development Sr Staff Engineer will report to the Senior Engineering Manager of the Recording Head Operation (RHO) Mechanical Research & Development group at the Bloomington, MN Seagate site.

This individual will be responsible for integrating emerging technology into new products to meet the specific requirements of mechanical and reliability performance. The engineer will work with the head design team, drive design team, and Far East production teams to help insure that a manufacturable head design is developed and the performance meets the drive requirements.

About you:

  • Candidate will have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills as well.
  • Must be comfortable working in a diverse environment across multiple time zones.
Your experience includes:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills required. The qualified candidate is expected to effectively communicate to the product core team, drive customer, Far East production sites, and various internal functional groups on highly technical issues involving overall mechanical product design and performance.
  • Excellent skills in organizing, scheduling, and executing engineering projects in the cross-functional environment
  • Hands on process experience in hard drive or semiconductor industry,esprelated to defect reduction and cleaning processes at nano scale level.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 10+ years experience, or Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 8+ years experience, or PHD and 6+ years of experience or equivalent education and experience

You might also have:

  • Direct experience with factory environment
  • Strong process engineering background with hands-on experience
  • Strong analytical skills and proven problem solver.
  • Basic understanding of statistics and database
