Summary of Job Duties:Under the general supervision of the physics department, responsible for image fusion, treatment planning, calculations secondary calculation checks, planning quality assurance, and consultation. Incumbent is subject to overtime and call back as required by the institution. Their primary role involves collaborating with radiation oncologists and medical physicists to calculate and deliver the precise radiation dose necessary to treat tumors while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree plus certification as a Medical Dosimetrist by the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) or eligible after completion of JRCERT accredited program in Medical Dosimetry required

  • Performs treatment planning and dose calculations using computers, calculators and manual techniques for external beam treatment planning.
  • Identifies and contours normal and dose-limiting structures by utilizing images from one or more data sets. Is proficient in image registration with various image data sets to in clude CT, MRI, and PET.
  • Prepares blocks, bolus material, positioning devices, other treatment aids as needed. Checks treatment aids for suitability and accuracy when necessary to assist therapist.
  • Completes proper records, patient data forms, planning documents, and billing information logs for all treatment planning, calculations, patient measurements, consultations, and chart checks, when necessary.
  • Consults with physicians and therapists to obtain information for patient planning and dose calculations. Works closely with radiation therapy staff to investigate problems in patient treatments or set-up techniques, aids in recommending solutions to problems, reports results to supervisor when adverse reactions occur, or when no solution to the problem is reached.
  • Performs checks on patient charts for accuracy and proper documentation according to established procedures.
  • Monitors and adheres to general radiation safety guidelines.
  • Develops and maintains a positive and professional work climate and the overall team effort of the institution and ROC.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient, employee, and institutional information.
  • Assists radiation therapists with patient set-up procedures at treatment machine and\or simulator as needed.
  • Acts in concordance with the AAMD Code of Ethics.
  • Due to the academic nature of this department, occasionally hosts and teaches an observer (student, radiation therapist, resident, fellow, etc.) applied aspects of medical dosimetry.
  • Participates in clinical research as needed.
  • Participates in quality improvement processes
  • Treatment planning and dosimetry skills as normally acquired in a one-year training program in medical dosimetry under the direct supervision of a medical physicist.
  • Knowledge of health care informatics, including the resources, devices and methods to acquire, store and retrieve data. Tools include computers as well as clinical guidelines, current medical terminology, information and communication systems.
  • High level critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, but in collaboration with the Radiation Oncologist and Medical Physicist.
  • Ability to interpret criteria and develop treatment plans as defined by relevant treatment protocols.
  • Technical skill in mathematics and physics as normally acquired in freshman and sophomore college level coursework for science majors or in completing an accredited dosimetry program. Math coursework should include 2 semesters of algebra, one semester of pre-calculus and one semester of calculus. Math coursework requirements may be waived for appropriate amount of workplace experience obtained by working in the medical dosimetry field.
  • Skill and proficiency in the principles, concepts and techniques of the dosimetry profession, such proficiency as normally acquired through completion of an accredited dosimetry program.
  • Knowledge of treatment planning techniques, record and verify techniques, scheduling, physician protocols or (prerogatives), equipment and/or software operation, safety and quality control guidelines as acquired through clinical rotation of all treatment areas (machines) for a period of one year.
