Summary of Job Duties:The Research Associate will report directly to the Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Amy Y. Sato, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physiology and Cell Biology. The Research Associate will manage overall organization of the laboratory, assist with regulation compliance and inspections, execute and assist with animal experimentation, mouse databases and mouse colony maintenance, assist with writing of animal use protocols (AUP) and standard operating procedures for animal experimentation (SOPs), maintain consistency in all experimental protocols, ordering and record-keeping for laboratory supplies, writing new experimental cellular in vitro and animal in vivo protocols, organization of laboratory chemicals/reagents, performing technical procedures related to analysis of bone, cardiac, and skeletal muscle by working with live mice and ex vivo samples by organ culture, histological, and mRNA/protein related-assays, provide training to new technical laboratory personal, fellows and students in protocols and procedures involving mice and maintain a respectful professional working relationship with the director and personnel of the University Animal Laboratory regarding mouse health and mouse care charges.Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree plus five (5) years of research experience required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Certification in Animal Husbandry.

  • Animal maintenance.

  • Laboratory Inspections related to animal work and hazardous laboratory management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

  • Experience in rodent animal experimentation and animal protocol development.


Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the overall organization of the laboratory (chemicals, reagents, equipment, orders, records, etc.).

  • Maintain consistency in all experimental protocols-work with mice, cells, and organ cultures.

  • Provide oversight on the ordering of laboratory supplies.

  • Participate in strategic planning/scheduling of animal experimentation.

  • Analyze and make recommendations to the PI in facilitating cost-savings and operational efficiencies in the laboratory work.

  • Ensure effective coordination of day-to-day operations and monitor the progress and performance of all experimentation (including in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo approaches).

  • Provide budgetary oversight of laboratory expenditures in coordination with the PI and the Administrative Assistant.

  • Coordinate the agenda, and write the minutes and action items for the meetings of the PI with all members of the research group (general lab meeting) and with subgroups of researchers for specific projects.

  • Provide oversight of all animal experimentation.

  • Perform and/or provide training and oversight for new personnel, fellows, and students in the laboratory.

  • Manage mouse databases and records.

  • Maintain mouse colonies.

  • Perform technical procedures related to the analysis of bone, heart, and skeletal muscle by histomorphometric, mRNA/protein/gDNA-related approaches.

  • Provide hands-on training to new technical personnel, fellows, and students in protocols and procedures involving animals (mice).

  • Maintain a respectful professional interaction with the director and personnel of the University Animal Laboratory regarding animal health and animal care charges.

  • Write animal use protocols (AUP).

  • Write standard operating procedures for animal experimentation (SOPs).

  • Develop new AUP and SOPs as needed for new research developed by the PI.

  • Assist the PI in the submission of AUPs and SOPs for institutional regulatory reviews.

  • Assist the PI in the revision of AUPs and SOPs applications requested by the regulatory reviews.

  • Assist the PI with regulation compliance and inspections.

  • Maintain controlled substance inventory, chemical inventory, and record for reagents and lab orders.

  • Maintain records of animal experiments inventory to ensure compliance with regulations.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
